Child support debt reaches $3b

There are concerns not enough is being done to collect billions of dollars owed in overdue child support.

The alarm has been raised in the wake of the Government’s move to delay reforms of the child support system.

Thousands of Kiwi families rely on child support but many are going without.

“The consequence of this are the children and families don’t get to eat that week,” said Beneficiaries Advocacy Service manager Karen Pattie

Parents are in debt to the tune of nearly $3 billion in overdue child support. In 2012 the money owed was $2.45 billion while in 2011 it was $2.27 billion.

“We’ve currently got about a quarter of our customer base living overseas, so that’s where a lot of the complexity comes into collecting money,” IRD child support business manager James Grayson.
