Brothel’s fundraiser for kids charity slammed

Family First Comment: “How can we be serious about reducing sexual violence against women when brothels legitimise the sexual abuse and exploitation of vulnerable people? There is a healthy stigma against prostitution – and for good reason.”

A fundraiser by a brothel to raise money for a charity that makes kids’ lunches is being slammed by a family watchdog.
South Taranaki bordello “Shh…Adult Fun Spot” is hosting an “open home” next month to raise money for Kai Kitchen, a charity that provides school lunches for about 40 Hawera children.
During the adult-only open day, three staff members will lead visitors on site tours and answer questions about their jobs.
But Family First national director Bob McCoskrie is branding the fundraiser a “tacky” gimmick and a cynical attempt by the brothel owners to promote their business and normalise prostitution.
He called for the children’s food charity to reject any association with the brothel and distance itself from the fundraiser.
“This is simply a cynical attempt by the sex industry to try and normalise a business by having an ‘open home’, which many in the community will object to.
To then associate prostitution with children and promote the brothel via a charity feeding children is just tacky,” he said.
Mr McCoskrie said families did not want brothels in communities or near schools, churches, marae, shopping precincts or restaurants. The organisation was regularly contacted by concerned parents throughout New Zealand opposed to brothels opening in their local communities, he said.
Family First was also concerned at the link between prostitution and gangs and criminal behaviour, alcohol and drug abuse and sexual abuse and violence.
“How can we be serious about reducing sexual violence against women when brothels legitimise the sexual abuse and exploitation of vulnerable people? There is a healthy stigma against prostitution – and for good reason,” said Mr McCoskrie.

South Taranaki brothel children’s charity fundraiser idea slammed by Family First NZ
A brothel’s open day plan to raise money for a charity that feeds hungry children has been labelled tacky and cynical by an outspoken morals watchdog.
Family First NZ national director Bob McCoskrie accused Hawera’s South Taranaki brothel “Shh…Adult Fun Spot” of using the open day as a way of promoting its business and trying to normalise prostitution under the guise of a charitable fundraiser.
“This is simply a cynical attempt by the sex industry to try and normalise a business by having an ‘Open Home’ which many in the community will object to.
“To then associate prostitution with children and promote the brothel via a charity feeding children is just tacky.”

Brothel madam offers sightseeing tours to raise money for a children’s charity
Daily Mall Australia 18 February 2016
A New Zealand brothel owner has been slammed for planning to open her bordello to the public to raise money for a children’s charity.
Nicky Hughes, owner of the ‘Shh… Adult Fun Spot’ brothel on the country’s North Island, is planning to raise money for Kai Kitchen charity and believes the event will ‘help to break down barriers’ between the community and the sex industry.
But the event has been slammed by a national family watchdog, who deemed it an attempt to promote the brothel and normalise the sex industry.
‘It’s completely wrong. The brothel is clearly trying to promote its business,’ Family First national director Bob McCoskrie told Daily Mail Australia.
‘It’s normalising prostitution’ for children, he said.
‘The stigma that surrounds prostitution exists for good reason’ he added.
Mr McCoskrie is calling for the event to be boycotted and for Kai Kitchen to distance itself from the brothel.
