English Riots – Hitting the nail on the head

Melanie Phillips writes a super article in the Daily Mail entitled “Britain’s liberal intelligentsia has smashed virtually every social value”

So now the chickens have well and truly come home terrifyingly to roost. The violent anarchy that has taken hold of British cities is the all-too-predictable outcome of a three-decade liberal experiment which tore up virtually every basic social value.

The married two-parent family, educational meritocracy, punishment of criminals, national identity, enforcement of the drugs laws and many more fundamental conventions were all smashed by a liberal intelligentsia hell-bent on a revolutionary transformation of society.

Those of us who warned over the years that they were playing with fire were sneered at and smeared as Right-wing nutters who wanted to turn the clock back to some mythical golden age.

Now we can see what they have brought about in the unprecedented and horrific scenes of mob violence, with homes and businesses going up in flames, and epidemic looting.

Brilliant article – thanks for posting this Bob. I notice an interesting comment at the bottom of the article at 16:03 that refers to New Zealand. The comment has received a huge response in the UK.

It was interesting to hear Kim Hill talking about the riots with one of her correspondents.

It became very clear that they were going to refuse to actually acknowledge the issue at hand, yet once you put aside the spin, it was interesting how many facts they were forced to admit.

These riots mark a turning point. Will the UK continue to rest on it’s WWII laurels(as evidenced by the bizarre flyover of the palace by ancient aircraft after the royal wedding), or will they take the hard way out and take the steps to once again become a great nation.

I predict they’ll make some token effort which will be swiftly undermined. In a few years, this will all be forgotten and the group I call “the 6%” will be calling the shots again.

A small matter of context: Melanie Griffiths is a well-known conservative writer, writing for a conservative paper variously described as the “Daily Hate”, or the “Daily Scare story”, second only to the Sun in sensationalism. There, we have the setting.
She makes some incredible, unblushing, claims: that EVERY fault in the UK today is due to, quote, “the liberal intelligentsia.” After rolling out this outrageousness she adds some other usual suspects for the riots: family breakdown, soft policing, drugs, etc.
Her reasons are decidedly parochial, shallow and based on hysterical emotion rather than facts. The real reasons are too complex and many to detail in a blog site. But they include the destruction of Britain’s manufacturing base by free-market ideology, promoting excessive consumerism that raises demands and expectations of people, the anomie of a modern, industrial landscape, social engineering that houses people in concrete housing estates- all exacerbating changing family structures (true). But how about corruption amongst politicians, police chiefs, CEO’s, and other leading “luminaries” in UK society setting the example?
Hypocrisy abounds. Power pulls the usual strings and now talks tough. Is that there only solution? It is easier, and more popular with the voters (and Daily Mail readers), to lambast rioters and scream for harsher policing and sentencing.
A small related matter: It is the intelligentsia of any country that advances a country with new ideas and a liberal outlook that manages to end such established outrages as say, oh, slavery, colonialism, or denying women the vote. Fascists, theocrats, and communists are usually the first to attack intelligentsia because they represent thinking. And I guess thinking is never popular with the blood-seeking mob, whether rioters or outraged conservatives.
