NZ Medical Association not supporting medicinal cannabis

A group that supports doctors says it cannot support a bill to allow the use of medicinal cannabis because it isn’t a medicine.

The New Zealand Medical Association has given it’s submission to a select committee this morning, putting forward its case against the legalisation of the illegal drug.

Chair of the Association Kate Baddock, says there’s concern the Government put in a compassionate clause for the use of medicinal cannabis.

“People who are within the end of life within 12 months would be able to use cannabis but would not be able to buy it because it is illegal to sell it, but it would be okay if they had it and it would not be criminally convicted.”

She says understanding this can be very difficult to ascertain
