Labour is announcing it will do away with the Families Commission if it gets the chance.

MP Jacinda Ardern says they want to scrap the commission and instead prioritise spending on reducing child poverty.

“We don’t believe that the Families Commission now is playing the kind of role that we need it to be playing in a modern New Zealand.

“In fact, instead what we would like to do is just beef up the role of the Children’s Commissioner, particularly the work they’re doing around child poverty.”

But the politician behind the establishment of the Families Commission wonders if Labour is united in its desire to do away with it.

United Future MP Peter Dunne says Labour isn’t being family friendly and really it’s just rejigging budgets and creating uncertainty.
