Quote of the Week – Goff on Referendums

Regarding the Referendum on asset sales, Phil Goff (who was Opposition Leader at the time of the anti-smacking Referendum) says

The possible citizen’s initiated referendum would be non-binding, but Mr Goff says it would be a “display of arrogance” for the Government to ignore the result.

Calling Mr Goff – “What was your response to the overwhelming rejection of the anti-smacking law in the Referendum?”

My mother used to say “Every boy needs a good pat on the back – often enough and if necessary low enough.” How true that is – yesterday and still today.

Tonight i found out how powerless we are as parents all we can do to discipline our children is NO, STOP, DONT DO THAT and it does nothing all parents should have the right to decide how to discipline our children. There is a big difference between a smack on the backside or hand to beating your child to death. The smacking law needs to be overturned 87% of parents in new zealand ignore it anyway and people who do kill their children dont do it in public they do it where they cant get caught so innocent good parents are being prosecuted cause people in this country dont know right from wrong its very sad.

To be consistent, as I oppose binding citizens referenda completely, I also oppose the one on asset sales just as much, and for the same reasons. And while I take Phil Goff’s opinions seriously, I wonder what current Labour leader David Shearer thinks of this.

Again, I must ask other social conservatives to consider how easily this can, and has, been abused to maintain and extend access to euthanasia in Switzerland and the United States, ‘medical’ marijuana access in the United States and heroin distribution in Switzerland
