A Parliamentary Select Committee was in Auckland this morning, to hear submissions on the Parental Leave and Employment Protection Bill, which would increase paid leave from three to six months.
At the moment either parent can use the 14 weeks available, or it can be split between the two.
Family First Director Bob McCroskie says they would like to see six months paid leave for mothers and two weeks for fathers.
“Parental leave for fathers also acknowledges just how tough it is for mums in those first couple of weeks after birth.
“I think we completely underestimate that – the whole sleep deprivation and the breastfeeding.”
