Australian tourist towns follow New Zealand on Wicked Campers

Aussie tourist towns have followed New Zealand’s lead and banned Wicked Campers from caravan parks.
Blue Mountains and Byron Bay banned the vans after New Zealand censor Andrew Jack ruled that some slogans were objectionable and therefore had to stay out of public places or face a hefty fine.
The vans are popular with young tourists mostly because they are cheap to hire. However some are daubed with lurid and sometimes graphic depictions of oral sex, drug use and misogynistic slogans which prompted complaints from the New Zealand travelling public.
In April, New Zealand’s Classification Office ruled against three slogans on the controversial Australian company’s vehicles, stating the vans qualified as “objectionable publications”.
Family First national director Bob McCoskrie believed it was a good result from New South Wales, as Wicked continued to disrespect public sensibilities.
“Look, we have never said they should be banned, we just wanted the harmful, offensive messaging banned,” McCoskrie said.
He suggested Department of Conservation camping grounds in New Zealand should also follow the lead.
There was also a need for slogans on the vans to be treated as a billboard, and therefore advertising, which falls under the Advertising Standards Authority.
“We believe all advertising should be g-rated.”
Wicked had not responded to request for comment.
Associate Minister of Tourism Paula Bennett also declined to comment.
