Police have recovered 97 bags of synthetic drugs during a routine traffic stop in Hawke’s Bay.

Officers stopped a driver at around 1pm on Wednesday afternoon in Flaxmere after noticing the poor condition of his vehicle, which appeared not to meet Warrant of Fitness standard.

Once he was stopped, the 25-year-old driver tried to throw a bag and a cellphone into the back of his car.

Inside the bag, police found cash and cannabis, leading them to complete a search of the entire car.

During the search, they recovered nearly 100 bags of synthetic drugs.

Senior Sergeant Steve Nicoll said it’s likely “it would have ended up causing significant harm”.

The man is due to appear in court on Tuesday, October 23, where he will face charges of possession of psychoactive substances for supply, and possession of cannabis – as well as driving offences.

Police told media they want the public to know they are working hard to get the drug of the streets and to report anyone suspected of making or supplying the drug.
