Waimate library removed Into the River before ban

Waimate District Library removed controversial book Into the River more than a year before it was banned nationwide.
The award-winning kiwi novel, written by Auckland based novelist Ted Dawe, includes sexually explicit content some organisations say is too racy for its intended teeange audience.
An interim ban restricts it from being displayed in libraries or sold in stores anywhere in New Zealand. The fines, for doing so, range from $3000 to $10,000.
Waimate assistant librarian Linda Halkett revealed on Tuesday library staff removed the “shocking” novel from its collection in early 2014.
The Film and Literature Board of Review placed an interim restriction order on the book on September 3.
It bans anyone in New Zealand from displaying or exhibiting the book, which won the New Zealand Post Margaret Mahy Book of the Year in 2013.
