Eat at home five nights a week to cut risk of Type 2 diabetes

Family First Comment: They discovered that people who ate at home between five and seven nights of the week were 15 per cent less likely to have developed Type 2 diabetes over the study period compared to those who ate out at least five nights a week. Those people who ate at home also gained less weight on average.
Eating at home on at least five nights a week could lower the chance of developing Type 2 diabetes, scientists at Harvard University have found.
Researchers followed nearly 100,000 people for more than 20 years monitoring their diet and whether they ate in or out of the house on a regular basis.
They discovered that people who ate at home between five and seven nights of the week were 15 per cent less likely to have developed Type 2 diabetes over the study period compared to those who ate out at least five nights a week.
Those people who ate at home also gained less weight on average.
Previous studies have shown the food prepared out of home, whether in fast-food outlets or restaurants, tends to be less healthy than home cooking, containing more salt, fat and sugar.
It is the first study to link meals out of the house to the risk of developing diabetes.
Qi Sun, of the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Heath, Boston, USA said: “It is likely that the participants who prepared their own meals may be more conscious about the food they ate compared with those who consumed their food more passively, leading to underestimated food and total energy intake.
