The number of suicides in New Zealand has increased again in the last June year, to a new high of 579 in the coroners’ provisional statistics.
This is the most suicides since 2010/11, when there were 558 in the provisional statistics.
Earthquake-stricken Canterbury had the highest rate by district health board with 78, followed by the Waikato with 55.
There was also a rise in women committing suicide, with an increase of 34 on last year, as male suicides reduced by 19.
The 25-29-year-old age group recorded highest number (66).
When looking at ethnicity, Māori suicides were down by one, to 129.

NZ suicide toll: More discussion needed to bring down ‘unacceptably high’ rate, Chief Coroner says
Stuff co.nz 18 October 2016
Men aged between 25 and 29, and women aged between 40 and 44, are the most at-risk when it comes to suicide, new figures show.
The female suicide rate is the highest on record, with 170 women dying by suicide during the past year.
While more men die by suicide in New Zealand, the gap between the genders is the smallest it’s been.
Once again, New Zealand’s suicide toll is the worst it’s been since the Coroner’s Office began keeping records in 2008.

Suicide number hits highest figure since coroner’s office started to publish figures
TVNZ One News 18 October 2016
The provisional suicide toll has risen to 579: the highest figure since the coroner’s office began publishing the statistics. That’s up from 564 in the previous year.
Chief Coroner Judge Deborah Marshall said the rate of people dying by suicide has “remained consistent and shows New Zealand still has a long way to go in turning this unacceptably high total around.”
