Alleged brothel ‘like a fast-food restaurant’

Men were visiting a Christchurch home allegedly operating as an illegal brothel as if it was a fast-food restaurant, the district court has heard.
Fan Jiang has pleaded not guilty to five charges brought by the Christchurch City Council relating to illegally operating a brothel at 10a England St, in Phillipstown.
At the Christchurch District Court on Wednesday, neighbour Alia Eckford, who has lived in England St for about five years with her husband and two children, said the street had been a quiet place before the alleged brothel opened in 2013. Since then it had changed “dramatically” and men were visiting the house like they were “going to McDonalds”.
“It’s like a 24-hour thing. It never stops,” she told the court on day two of the hearing.
“It’s become loud and noisy and there’s a lot of men. I am not a sexist person but I don’t feel safe anymore.”
Eckford said the brothel was so busy she could not park outside her home because half the street was full with cars.
Last year, a man knocked on Eckford’s door at about midnight asking where the brothel was. She had found condom wrappers outside her home.
“It makes me feel angry. I’ve got two children sleeping next to the front door.”
