Beware The Woke Religious Politician

There’s a new star on the political left in the US. He’s a Democrat and he’s just become a 2026 U.S. Senate candidate – in Texas. And the media love him. And the radical left love him. But he says he’s a “Christian”. Isn’t Christianity and ‘Christian Nationalism’ the next biggest threat after Hitler, disinformation, fascism & whiteness, according to the media? Well, no, not when it’s Christianity that the radical left and the media agree with. The real question is – do we have politicians like this in NZ?

Show Script:

Beware the woke religious politician

There’s a new star on the political left in the US. He’s a Democrat and he’s just become a 2026 U.S. Senate candidate – in Texas.

And the media love him. And the radical left love him.

But he says he’s a “Christian”.

Isn’t Christianity and Christian Nationalism the next biggest threat after Hitler, disinformation, fascism & whiteness, according to the media?

Well, no, not when it’s Christianity that the radical left and the media agree with.

The real question I want to ask you is – do we have politicians like this in NZ? You need to check.

James Talarico is a Christian and identifies as a ‘progressive’ Christian. (It’s always dangerous when you have to put an adjective in front of the term ‘Christian’.) He is a Presbyterian seminarian and the grandson of a Baptist preacher, frequently rooting his political actions in his faith.

He’s been described as one of the most faith-forward politicians in the United States.

Talarico, a newly nominated 2026 U.S. Senate candidate in Texas, uses his faith to argue for social justice – not justice as per the Bible imperative, but “social” justice – and often opposing “Christian nationalism” and advocating for policies based on “loving thy neighbour”.

So he wants policies based on biblical principles but apparently that’s not Christian nationalism.

It’s a bit like global warming. When it gets cold, its obviously not warming so we change the term to “climate change”. Very convenient eh.

Now there’s actually a very good article on our website about this concept which is also called “Progressive Christianity” or another term is woke Christianity.

What is Progressive Christianity? Is it a different faith altogether?

Progressive Christianity is a liberal movement within Christianity that focuses on contemporary issues like social justice, inclusivity, climate change, reproductive rights (aka abortion) and LGBTQ+ rights. It places a particularly strong focus on activism. Progressive Christians often interpret the teachings of Jesus in ways that challenge established Christian norms. Progressive Christianity has been shaped by various intellectual and social movements such as feminism, critical theory and postmodernism.

And LGBT radicalism.

Generally I find a good yardstick is that if the media are on your side and agreeing with you, you probably need to go back to the Bible and check the teachings again.

Some examples

LGBTQ+ Inclusion: Many Progressive Christians fully support LGBTQ+ rights, same-sex marriage and even LGBTQ+ clergy & leadership, interpreting the Bible’s teachings as promoting love and inclusion. This differs significantly from traditional Christianity which opposes same-sex relationships and views marriage as strictly between a man and a woman – based on Scriptural truth. Traditional Christianity emphasises the Genesis creation story whereby God created 2 sexes only – male and female.

Abortion & Reproductive Rights: Progressive Christians often advocate for a woman’s right to choose abortion, whereas Conservative Christians typically see abortion as murder, based on the belief that life begins at conception.

Pluralism & Other Religions: Many Progressive Christians embrace diverse spiritual perspectives. They acknowledge the validity of other faiths, suggesting that multiple paths lead to God. This pluralism is a rejection of fundamental Christian doctrine.

Deconstructing Faith: Many progressive Christians engage in “faith deconstruction”, questioning traditional Biblical beliefs and reshaping their spiritual foundations. Unfortunately this typically leads people away from biblical truth.

That’s what I’ve observed – and in most cases of people who have deconstructed, it’s almost always because they reject Biblical teaching and authority around especially the LGBT issue & the abortion issue. That’s because the culture is pushing a new religion in both of these areas – sexual narcissism & hedonism, and rejection of the sanctity of life. That applies to the push for euthanasia as well.

Climate Alarmism: While it’s the responsibility of Christians to be good stewards of the environment and natural resources, many progressive Christians seem obsessed with climate change activism, they preach “climate alarmism” – the exaggeration of climate matters to provoke fear and anxiety.

Critical Theory: Common among Progressive Christians is Critical Theory, which is a Marxist-inspired movement which aims to deconstruct social, historical, and ideological structures of society. Progressive Christians view society through this critical lens. Rather than taking a traditional Christian view that “we are all one in Christ”, Progressive Christians tend to focus on special interest groups and activism.

So this new star Democrat candidate in Texas has been presenting his view of Christianity & biblical Truths.

Let’s check them out.

And ask yourself – have you heard these types of statements from New Zealand politicians – especially ones who may confess some sort of church involvement and faith.

This is gonna be quite the ride. You may need to do a bible study after this just to cleanse yourself and realign yourself with Scriptural Truth.

So you know about God creating us male and female. Apparently God missed out four of them

Yep – definitely not a scientist. Definitely a politician

But this “Christian” loves trans children – children who think they’re the opposite sex. Who suffer from gender dysphoria. Children who radicals want to chemicalise and castrate and confuse.

Oh we love them also – but we want them to know biological truth and to celebrate who they were created by God to be. We don’t want them to lose healthy sexual organs for the sake of an ideology. God doesn’t make mistakes, James.

He got a lot of flak for that interview – labelled “creepy”

Here’s an interesting question. Are there politicians in NZ who believe the same as James but also say they align with the Christian faith? Who promote gender ideology. Who refuse to answer the question “What is a woman”. Or who think a man can get pregnant?

But you know – God the Father is non-binary – apparently and has “they” pronouns

Well yes – children are perfect – they way they were created by God. Don’t confuse, chemicalise & castrate them with your radical confusion. But the trans community needs abortion

Only women can get pregnant. I know that’s going to blow your mind. But our “Christian” left wing Democrat is very much pro abortion. In fact the Bible even backs him up – apparently.

Even Mary was pro-choice

VIDEO – james talarico god is pro choice

So because Mary said “I am the Lord’s servant. May your word to me be fulfilled”, this proved she was pro choice – but you know, she could have chosen abortion. She could have chosen to abort the Son of God.

But all real Christians are pro choice

“Reject embryonic personhood.” Ooh – don’t tell James what happened when Mary visited Elizabeth and Elizabeth’s baby (John the Baptist) leapt in her womb. Don’t quote Psalm 139 to James – “For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb.”

Is this the “Christianity” that pretends that you only become human when you pass through the birth canal?

By the way, the Southern Baptist Convention were wrong. Even they admitted that. In 1980, the SBC resolved that “abortion ends the life of a developing human being”.

Of course the old chestnut. Jesus didn’t specifically mention abortion. He didn’t need to. 10 Commandments – thou shall not kill. It was already written in stone – literally!

But we then find out that his mum was an abortion activist. Choice is power. Killing the unborn child is “power”.

Did he say “Trump”???

Apparently, women will never be free until they can kill their child in the womb

Once again I ask that interesting question. Are there politicians in NZ who believe the same as James but also say they align with the Christian faith? Who are pro abortion. If there are, they’re the last people you should be voting for. Because they’re not only dangerous for the unborn child, but they’re also dangerous because they’re promoting a false Gospel.

Here’s a gospel you probably haven’t heard of. And it’s “Love their neighbour” – except for the ones in the womb of course.

By the way, early church leaders deemed the Gospel of Thomas heretical and Gnostic

Here’s some more fascinating theology. Only a woman could beat Jesus in a debate – it wasn’t actually a debate – but don’t tell James that

Yeah – don’t mention Martha and Mary and the persistent widow. And definitely don’t mention that debate that Jesus had with the woman caught in adultery where he debates with her, “neither do I condemn you. Go now and leave your life of sin.”

Awkward.

But he still tries to justify killing the unborn child in the womb

Why is it always people who have been born that promote and support abortion.

But James is suspicious about Christians who quote the Bible and promote biblical teachings that are pro life and uphold biblical sexual ethics – issues that the culture is desperate to change and reject traditional Biblical teaching on. That’s why they’re key issues. The culture is rejecting what it means to be human.

He was recently featured with the New York Times in a podcast

There’s two fundamental errors in his “theology”.

Firstly – and most importantly – like most on the ‘progressive’ & radical left bandwagon, they claim that the focus should be on “feeding the hungry, healing the sick, welcoming the stranger.”

Yes – absolutely – we should do all those things. Christian organisations operate foodbanks, have hospitals, do mercy missions, work with families, operate schools, offer financial support and budgeting services, welcome all people into their churches… Way back in 1995 I actually established such an organisation in South Auckland which is still operating to this day and serves the local community in various ways.

The so-called “religious right” do that. But they don’t compromise or deny the Biblical mandates around who we are as humans, who God created as, the role of marriage & family, biblical sexual ethics.

Contrary to the narrative of the political & religious left – amplified by the media – its not either / or. It’s both / and.

These Christian organisations have served their communities – while holding on to orthodox Christian teaching.

It is so important to push back on the false narrative that is repeated ad nauseum.

Christians serve communities AND uphold Biblical Truth.

I just want to touch on the old “Jesus never talked about it” argument

Robert Gagnon (Visiting Scholar of Bible at Wesley Biblical Seminary) completely destroys this line of argument:

The reason why Jesus and biblical writers didn’t talk about “gay marriage” was the same reason why they didn’t talk about marriage with your mother or sibling or child: Any sexual behaviour of the sort, whether in a one-time act or in an attempt at a committed relationship was prohibited as an extreme sexual sin abhorrent and detestable to God. … Jesus thought that a male-female prerequisite for marriage was so important that he used it as the foundation for rejecting any sexual bond involving more than two persons (whether concurrent or serial). According to Jesus, the twoness of the sexes, the sexual binary, God’s intentional design of two and only two sexual counterparts, is the basis for limiting the number of persons in a marriage to two. That’s Jesus’ moral logic behind his citation of “male and female he (God) made them.”

Exactly. Same as with abortion. Same with all sin in general. And yes – we are all sinners in need of the amazing grace of God.

2 Timothy 3:16 – All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right.

But once again, are there politicians in NZ who believe the same as James but also say they align with the Christian faith? Have you checked before you vote?

Politicians from the religious left who vote for same-sex marriage, transing the kids with puberty blockers, promote gender identity, abortion, exclude parents from knowing about these things that involve their own children, promote radical RSE programmes, euthanasia, pretend that men can get pregnant, and your gender is fluid… Not only are these politicians wrong – they’re also selling a confused Christianity.

It continues…

He’d make a great Greens candidate wouldn’t he. Sounds familiar.

But he also thinks that a bill which allows the 10 Commandments to be posted is “violence

Yes – recognising the Christian DNA of a country like the US or NZ above other religions is “violence”.

Always be wary of “Christian” politicians who bend over backwards for other faiths & religions but are embarrassed by their own faith or refuse to acknowledge it.

Do we have any politicians like that? You know we do…

The other favourite topics of the religious left are climate alarmism

Don’t tell Rev James that cattle (both dairy and beef) in NZ are responsible for approximately 30–35% of New Zealand’s total greenhouse gas emissions – primarily through burping and farting. Did God make a mistake when he created that juicy steak? I don’t think so

Here’s some critical theory that the religious left are into also

Nothing worse than being white. And Bible-believing Christian. Don’t even talk about “marriage”. Don’t even go there.

Because biblical Christianity is fascism in drag apparently

Okaaaaaay.

That was quite the sermon, wan’t it.

Do we have politicians like this in New Zealand.

That’s why you need to go to Value Your Vote.nz and check

It’s always why you need to ask politicians who are presenting themselves as Christian what their view is on there being only two sexes, the definition of marriage, protecting children from gender ideology & puberty blockers, opposing abortion and euthanasia, respecting the role of parents, encouraging the institution of marriage, are we either oppressors or oppressed rather than one in Christ – and other fundamental Christian teachings.

As I have said before, abortion for me is a significant measuring stick. Not just because of the biblical ethic and teaching around the sanctity of life, but if a political leader can’t even recognise that the child in the womb is still a child, deserving of recognition and life, why would you trust the political leader with any other decision – or with being part of an institution that makes laws and policy for the country.

Or if they believe that a man can get pregnant, that a boy should be able to play in womens sports, that somehow through castration and chemicals we can turn a boy into a girl, or they can’t define what a woman is- why would you let them anywhere near the halls of political power.

And if they profess to some sort of faith – especially Christian faith – that would make me run away from them even faster.

This isn’t “Christian nationalism” – whatever that is.

This is just about electing leaders who operate on the basis of understanding and upholding Truth, biology, reality & the sanctity of life & marriage.

Their Christian faith should confirm their suitability for such an office.

Make sure you check whether they’re suitable.
