God versus Wicked

Family First Comment: Front page of the Queenstown local rag. The nationwide campaign is getting traction!
Holy war has been declared on Wicked Campers.
Family First NZ boss Bob McCoskrie has slammed the rental vehicle company, telling Mountain Scene it’s a “mongrel organisation”.
The Aucklander says the slogans and images on their campervans are “sexist, misogynist and racist” and many families find them offensive.
People across the country, including families in Queenstown, are disgusted by them, McCroskie says.
“This company just completely gives everybody the two-fingered wave and doesn’t respect the code of advertising standards.”
Queenstowner Sarah Barham reckons the company’s slogans are getting cruder and more inappropriate.
McCroskrie says it’s within Queenstown council’s power, under plan change 48, to ban sexually explicit, indecent or offensive signs.
Council regulatory boss Lee Webster says they’re looking at it.
“The slogans used on some of the vehicles [can be] seen as offensive, however other people may not see them in the same manner.
“We are currently reviewing this matter to firstly determine if it is a matter that we can address and secondly the most appropriate manner in which to do this.”
Family First launched a campaign last month to put a stop to the in-your-face slogans and images being strewn across vans. McCoskrie reckons public advertising should be G-rated and is urging people who are offended to make complaints to the council.
This isn’t Wicked’s first dance with the devil.
In 2015, the world’s largest travel guide publisher, Lonely Planet, removed Wicked’s listing because of its bawdy signwriting.
A year earlier, the Queensland senator Claire Moore passed a Green Party motion condemning the content.
Around the same time, Aussie mum Paula Orbea had more than 100,000 signatures on a petition against Wicked to get “In every princess, there’s a little slut who wants to try it just once” removed from a van.
She won.
The company released an apologetic statement on Facebook, which said Aussie owner John Webb would be “making a commitment over the coming six months to changing slogans of an insensitive nature”.
Mountain Scene was unable to contact Webb by deadline.

Bennett condemns ‘offensive’ Wicked Campers
NewsHub 4 March 2016
A senior cabinet minister has called for action against Wicked Campers over the “despicable” signage on its rental vans.

The Brisbane-based company has been heavily criticised for years but hasn’t removed what have been described as violent, misogynist, racist and homophobic slogans.

“I can’t repeat what’s on those vans,” Paula Bennett told Paul Henry this morning.

“You couldn’t print it, so how on earth can you have it on campervans travelling around that children are seeing?”

Councils had the ability to fine people if their signage broke by-laws.

“When a van is stopped, effectively it is a sign and they can presumably be taken to court,” Paul Henry said.

“Let’s do it,” Ms Bennett responded.

“Let’s do some really strong messaging … the best way is for people not to be hiring from them because of the risk of being fined.”
