A man who admitted to smoking “half a bowl” of marijuana daily and causing a fatal crash has been sentenced to prison.
Cody Lawrence Willett, 22, was sentenced Thursday, Oct. 25 to four to 15 years in prison on a charge of operating under the influence causing death.
Willett caused a Jan. 2 rear-end crash on Cascade Road SE at Spaulding Road that killed 66-year-old Wilma Jean Debruin, the driver of another vehicle.
In court Thursday, Judge Dennis Leiber asked Willett about his history with marijuana.
Willett conceded that he started smoking marijuana when he was 15 or 16, then started using it at least once a month when he was 17. More recently, in the year before the fatal crash, he was smoking “half a bowl” (smoking pipe) each day.
When the Jan. 2 crash happened, Willett told police he became sleepy while driving and that his eyes closed. He said he could not avoid a collision once he opened them again.
Police later determined that Willett’s truck was going 77 mph one second prior to the crash.
A blood test showed 1 ng/ml of THC — the active chemical in marijuana — in Willett’s system
